Welcome to The Fraudian Slip…the Identity Theft Resource Center’s podcast where we talk about all-things identity compromise, crime, and fraud that impact people and businesses. I’m James Lee, the COO of the ITRC.

Last month in Part 1 of our series on the use of biometrics we focused on the different kinds of biometrics and the various uses for biometrics – in particular facial verification - comparing your face to a DMV photo in real-time to prove you are who you say you are to prevent identity fraud. That’s in contrast to the more problematic and complex practice of facial recognition which involves trying to identity someone among masses of photos – the tech equivalent of adding more hay to the haystack while looking for a needle.

Welcome to The Fraudian Slip, the Identity Theft Resource Center’s (ITRC) podcast, where we talk about all things identity compromise, crime and fraud that impact people and businesses. Listen on Apple, Google, Spotify, SoundCloud, Audible, and Amazon now. Last month in Part 1 of our series on the use of biometrics, we focused on the different kinds of biometrics and the various uses for biometrics. In particular, we looked at facial recognition – comparing your face to a DMV photo in real-time to prove you are who you say you are to prevent identity fraud. This ties into Driver’s License identity theft and the second part of our conversation.

In Part 2 and our final episode on the topic, we focus less on the technical aspect of biometrics and more on the policies and procedures needed to ensure we get the maximum benefits from these tools. We also break down the rise in Driver’s License identity theft.

Returning is Stephen Smith from Intellectual Technology, Inc. (ITI), a company that provides software to motor vehicle agencies to increase the speed, visibility and security of transactions, and ITRC President and CEO Eva Velasquez.

We talked with Stephen Smith about the following:

  • The ITRC recently reported a big uptick in Driver’s License information misuse. Also, the recent MOVEit ransomware attack exposed the entire Drivers and auto-owners databases for at least two states. What do you see in terms of fraud as a company that works to secure driver data?
  • How do biometrics benefit people who are not tech-savvy or who don’t have access to digital tools?

We talked with Eva Velasquez about the following:

  • How do biometrics benefit people who are not tech-savvy or who don’t have access to digital tools?
